Just a quick note to mention that this thread was discussed on the DrupalEasy podcast, Episode 8, at around 12:30. One quote stood out to me:

You can never completely tear everything down, you can never completely rewrite because there's just not enough time in the day. So while his suggestion to burn it all down might make sense to people who would have voted for Ron Paul, for example, it's just not realistic."
